This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Here's a test for partners in committed relationships who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it might appear like standard biological terror, but within Together lies a deep meditation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for over ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the two stars contribute a particular energy to their roles, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The story commences when Millie and Tim transition from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A familiar story element, sure, but that’s largely where the conventions conclude. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the two fall into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying of scares, interspersing bits of fever-dream horrors, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and far away from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of completely losing his individual identity in another person. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie face the type of challenges that arise in most partnerships a decade in. Deep down, they still love each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these concerns of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the allegory never feels overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply look at your partner and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can experience right now.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu at present.
